1997 first-generation Prius: What to do when the battery runs out

1997 formula  Toyota Prius model: HK-NHW10 engine model: 1NZ-FXE motor model: 1CM fuel economy: 28.0km / l (10.15 mode)

In December 1997 Hybrid car · Prius which succeeded in low fuel consumption · low emissions was released, and now it seems that it is running around 100,000 in the world. I will show you how to cope when the battery of this car goes up. This vehicle has a high voltage (288 V) circuit, and mechanics who conduct maintenance and inspection related to high voltage circuits attend special lecture based on “Article 59 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act” at the Development Promotion Organization etc. Is obligatory. For further information on the course, please contact the nearest maintenance promotion association.

Treatment when battery goes down
Since the Prius has a 12 V auxiliary battery and a 288 V HV battery, there are two ways of handling when the battery goes down

1: Treatment when auxiliary machine battery goes off

Symptom at the time of accessory battery rise

  • The meter is not displayed even when the IG switch is turned on
  • Hybrid system does not work
  • Headlamp is dark
  • Horn sound is small

Remedy: Do not use quick charger absolutely

  • Set shift lever to P range, apply parking brake
  • Pull out key plate from IG switch
  • Remove the 3 lips of the luggage compartment / lower side cover on the left side of the vehicle rear drunk room and remove it.

  • Connect the battery of the rescue car and the accessory battery of your vehicle using the booster cable in the following order
    • The + terminal of the auxiliary battery of the vehicle
    • + Terminal of the rescue car battery
    • Relief car battery – terminal
    • Luggage door / striker of the car (to ground the terminal)
    • Start the engine of the rescue car, keep the engine speed slightly higher and charge for 5 minutes
    • Set the IG switch to START and start the hybrid system
    • Remove in reverse order of connecting the booster cable.

Note 1) If the master warning and the HV battery warning light are lit without starting the hybrid system, it is possible to discharge the HV battery.

Note 2) When replacing the 12V auxiliary battery, be sure to replace with the Prius battery only

2: Treatment when the HV battery goes off

When the HV battery discharges, the master warning and the HV battery warning are lit, and the diagnosis code C 2573 is set in the battery ECU. In that case, boost the 12V of the rescuer to a high voltage with the Ni – MH battery charger and charge the battery for 10 minutes

  1. Set shift lever to P range, apply parking brake
  2. Pull out key plate from IG switch
  3. Remove the 3 lips of the luggage compartment / lower side cover on the left side of the vehicle rear drunk room and remove it.
  4. Connect the battery of the rescue car and the accessory battery of your vehicle using the booster cable in the following order
    • The + terminal of the auxiliary battery of the vehicle
    • + Terminal of the rescue car battery
    • Relief car battery – terminal
    • Luggage door / striker of the car (to ground the terminal)
  5. Start the engine of the rescue car
  6. Turn off the electric load of the car, the rescue car, the lamp, the audio, the air conditioner etc as much as possible
  7. When the start switch of the Ni – MH battery charger is pressed for 2 seconds, the CHARGE lamp (green lamp) lights up and charging starts. Note) Do not touch the Ni – MH battery charger body during charging because it becomes hot. Note) If an erroneous operation such as a decrease in the battery voltage of the relief vehicle, a disconnection of the booster cable, or turning on the IG switch of the vehicle occurs during charging, charging stops and the FAULT lamp (red lamp) lights at the same time The buzzer sounds for about 10 seconds to stop charging. (The above cause is stored as a diagnosis code in the battery ECU.) Return the malfunction to normal, after 5 minutes have elapsed, press the start / switch again.
  8. After approx. 10 minutes after charging, the CHARGE lamp flashes, the buzzer sounds for about 10 seconds to end charging.
  9. Set the IG switch to START and start the hybrid system.
  10. Remove in the reverse order to when connecting the booster cable.

Note) Although it can run immediately after charging, because the output limit lamp lights up, run at a moderate speed until the warning light disappears.
